Air filters and filter care: the cheapest power you own
A clogged air filter costs more power than most bolt-ons add, and it is the only part in this section that gets worse every mile you drive.
The real decision is disposable paper versus a washable reusable filter. Paper is cheap, filters slightly finer and gets thrown away. Oiled cotton gauze flows better, lasts the life of the truck and needs cleaning and re-oiling on a schedule. Over-oiling is the classic mistake and it will foul a mass airflow sensor. Dry synthetic sits between the two and needs no oil at all. On a dusty trail truck, filtration efficiency matters more than peak flow.
