Receiver hitches: the class is the ceiling
A receiver hitch bolts to the frame and is rated by class. Class III is the common two-inch receiver on half-ton trucks; Class IV and V step up in capacity and usually in opening size. The class sets the ceiling, and everything you plug into it has to be rated to match.
Two numbers matter and both are published: gross trailer weight, and tongue weight. Tongue weight is the one people ignore and the one that decides whether a trailer tracks straight or sways. Roughly ten to fifteen percent of the trailer's weight should sit on the ball.

A Class V hitch on a half-ton truck does not make it a three-quarter-ton. The vehicle's own tow rating, and its payload for the tongue weight, are almost always the real ceiling.
