Preload adjustment is the feature that earns its keep on a work machine, because a Defender rarely carries the same weight twice — set the spring height for a loaded bed and it stops wallowing. Damping is handled by self-adjusting deflective disc valving with independent rebound and compression, so the shock adapts to the terrain rather than being tuned for one surface.
