Running boards, nerf bars and side steps
Lift a truck and the cab moves further from the ground than most people can comfortably reach. A running board puts a step back and takes the rocker panel out of the firing line.
Full-length boards give the widest platform and the most rocker protection. Nerf bars are tubular, lighter, and step at set points rather than continuously. Powered steps retract out of sight and deploy when a door opens, which is the best answer for a lifted truck and the most expensive one. Whatever the style, a textured or studded surface is what stops it becoming an ice rink in the wet.

Boards are cut for a specific cab configuration — regular, extended and crew are three different parts, and a board for one will leave a gap or overhang on another. Mounting brackets are equally specific, and most bolt to existing points rather than needing holes.
