Weight distribution: putting the front axle back on the ground
Hitch a heavy trailer to a truck and the tongue weight pushes the rear down and levers the front up. Steering goes light, headlights point at the trees, and braking gets worse exactly when there is more to stop.
A weight-distributing hitch uses spring bars to transfer some of that tongue weight forward onto the front axle and back onto the trailer's own axles. It is not about levelling the truck for looks — it is about restoring the weight the front tires need to steer and stop. Past roughly half your rated capacity it stops being optional.

Sway control is a separate function
Weight distribution and sway control are different jobs, and a hitch that does one does not necessarily do the other. Sway comes from a trailer with too little tongue weight or too much frontal area, and friction or dual-cam systems damp it.
