Onboard air: airing down is the free traction upgrade
Dropping tire pressure lengthens the contact patch and lets the tread conform to what it is driving over. It is the single most effective thing you can do for traction on sand, rock or snow, and it costs nothing.
The catch is getting the air back before you hit pavement, because driving at trail pressure ruins tires and handling. An onboard air compressor is what makes airing down practical rather than theoretical. Portable units are cheaper and slower. Permanently mounted compressors are faster, always there, and can also run lockers and air tools.
