A spring holds the weight. A shock controls what the spring does next. Confusing the two is why people fit stiffer coil springs hoping for a better ride and get a worse one.
Rate is the number that matters: pounds per inch of compression. Too soft and a loaded truck sags and bottoms out; too stiff and an empty one skitters across washboard. Leaf springs add load capacity and axle location in one part, which is why they survive on the back of work trucks. Add-a-leaf and helper springs raise capacity cheaply at the cost of ride quality when the bed is empty.
