4Runner shocks: replacing a system, not just a damper
Before shopping for 4Runner shocks, find out what the vehicle left the factory with. Some trims carry a hydraulically cross-linked damping arrangement rather than four independent units, and swapping one corner of it for a conventional shock absorber does not work. The whole system has to come off together, and a number of listings say exactly that.
On a conventional 4Runner the front is a coilover, and the choice is between a bare damper that reuses your spring and a complete assembly that arrives built. The rear is coil-sprung with separate dampers. Height is the other variable: a unit sized for stock is fully extended on a lifted vehicle, so the listings quote a lift range as well as model years. Rear shocks are sold separately from fronts. That comes to 44 items.
