Silverado 1500 exhaust: tone, drone and where to cut
An exhaust system on a Silverado 1500 is bought for sound far more often than for power, and the honest version of that is worth saying out loud. The V8 has a note worth releasing, the muffler decides how much of it you hear, and the gain on the dyno is modest and is not why anyone does this.
Where the system starts decides how much changes. Cat-back replaces everything behind the catalytic converter and sets the character of the note. Axle-back is shorter, cheaper, and shifts tone with less else. The question to ask of either is drone — the resonance at highway cruise that sounds fine on a test drive and wears thin three hours into a trip — and chambered mufflers generally live with it better than straight-through ones do. Every system here names the cab, bed and engine it fits, because tailpipe length follows wheelbase on this truck. The list comes to 41 systems.
