The R suffix is the remote reservoir, and it is what separates this from the plain 56502 on an otherwise identical fitment. A reservoir gives the oil somewhere to go, which is what keeps damping consistent when the shock is working hard.

Same vehicle and same lift band as the non-reservoir shock: the Toyota Tacoma from 1995-2004 in 4WD at 0-1.5 in. What changes is the R — a remote reservoir, which increases oil capacity and separates gas from oil, so damping holds up over sustained rough going rather than fading.
