Choosing a strut

Cherokee shocks: axle travel, or strut travel

Which Cherokee you have decides what you are shopping for. The older solid-axle Jeeps move a long way at each corner and lean on the shock absorber to control it, which is why length and stroke matter so much on them and why a unit sized for stock height is wrong on a lifted one. The later car-derived Cherokee uses struts at the front and travels far less.

On the solid-axle Jeeps the damper is doing genuinely hard work at full articulation, and one that is too short becomes the part that limits the suspension rather than controls it. Steering is closely related but separate: a steering stabilizer damps the linkage while the shocks damp the ride, and neither substitutes for the other. Every item here names the years, the position and the lift range it suits. The list comes to 55 items.
