Cold air intakes: cooler air, and a filter you can reach

A cold air intake does two things. It moves the filter away from engine heat, because cooler air is denser and denser air burns better. And it replaces a restrictive factory airbox with tubing that lets the engine breathe at the top of its range.

The gains are modest on a gas V8 and real on a diesel. What you notice every day is throttle response and induction noise rather than a number on a dyno sheet. The trade is filtration and water: an open-element filter in the wheel well eats more dust and, on a truck that fords water, is a genuine risk.
