A soft top is lighter, cheaper and quicker to fold, and it is louder at highway speed. A hard top insulates, secures and stays quiet, and it takes two people and somewhere to store it. Tube doors keep the opening legal and airy without pretending to be weatherproof; half doors compromise between the two. Mirrors are the detail people forget — remove the doors and the mirrors usually go with them.

A removed hard top has to live somewhere, and a hoist or cart is worth budgeting for if you plan to swap seasonally. Soft tops need their seals and zips looked after or they leak at the worst moment.
