Be honest about why you are buying an exhaust system. On most trucks the power gain is modest; the change in character is immediate and is what you actually paid for.
Cat-back is the common choice: everything behind the catalytic converter, legal essentially everywhere, and the section that determines the note. Axle-back is shorter, cheaper and changes tone with little else. Header-back is the biggest job and the one with the most compliance implications. Straight-through mufflers are loudest, chambered are the most tolerable at cruise, and stainless costs more than aluminized because it is still there in six years.
