Every auxiliary light needs three things beyond the light itself: a relay so the switch is not carrying the current, a fuse sized to the load, and a switch that does not backfeed the ignition when the light is off.
Wiring a bar straight to a switch on a dashboard is how people melt looms. The relay lets a small trigger wire control a heavy circuit, and it is the single component that separates a safe install from a fire risk. Switch panels put several circuits in one place and label them, which matters at night with cold hands more than it does in a driveway.
