Steel bumpers where the plastic used to be
A factory bumper is a plastic cover over a crash beam. It has no recovery point, nothing a winch can bolt to, and it hangs low enough to catch on the first ledge you try to climb. A steel bumper or aluminum replacement fixes all three at once: the approach angle comes up, a rated shackle mount arrives somewhere you can actually reach it, and the winch finally has a home.
Front and rear solve different problems. The front bumper carries the winch, the lights and most of the impact. The rear carries the spare, the hitch and whatever you back into. Underneath, skid plates and rock sliders take the hits you never see coming.

Choosing between steel and aluminum bumpers
Steel is cheaper, stronger and heavier, and that weight lands on the front axle, where it will change how the truck rides and may need the springs addressed. Aluminum costs more and gives most of it back in mass. Either way, check what the bumper does to your sensors: a truck with parking sensors or adaptive cruise needs a bumper designed to relocate them, not one that buries them.
